Following the critical acclaim of his debut album Atlas—hailed by DownBeat Magazine and other leading publications—Zimbabwean-born guitarist and composer Matt Greenwood returns with his vibrant sophomore release, Daybreak.
Where Atlas was introspective and exploratory, Daybreak embraces a sense of courage and determination, diving deeper into guitar-driven sonic landscapes with renewed purpose. The album blends modern jazz, world and rock influences with ambient textures to create a sound that is both expansive and deeply personal.
Greenwood is joined by a powerhouse rhythm section featuring Mike Downes (bass) and Mark Kelso (drums), alongside a special guest from his homeland—acclaimed Zimbabwean percussionist Othnel ‘Mangoma’ Moyo—whose vibrant rhythmic energy bridges continents and cultures.
One of the album’s most ambitious undertakings is Greenwood’s reimagining of Claude Debussy’s La Damoiselle élue—the only piece on Daybreak not composed by Greenwood himself. His interpretation recontextualizes the work through a contemporary, guitar-forward lens, bridging classical impressionism with modern production aesthetics.
Daybreak marks a significant artistic evolution for Greenwood, offering a vibrant sonic experience that is at once intimate and boldly expressive.
Daybreak will be released in Spring 2026
