About:

With melody as the guiding star, guitarist and composer Matt Greenwood creates cinematic musical landscapes where composition and improvisation intersect. Having first lived in Zimbabwe and then Canada and now the United States Matt’s music is inherently nomadic and pushes against the confines of genre and geography.

Matt has had an extensive career as a sideman, having performed and recorded with legendary Zimbabwean artists including Oliver Mtukudzi, Gemma Griffiths, Forward Kwenda and Vee Mukarati as well some of Canada’s most acclaimed jazz musicians such as Robi Botos, Mark Kelso, Brian Dickinson and Mike Downes. Since moving to the US Matt as already performed with notable artists artists including Gregory Groover Jr., John Lockwood, Kris Davis and Devon Gates to name a few.

Growing up in Zimbabwe meant access to music education and equipment itself was extremely limited, but the country’s rich musical heritage and culture was an influential experience for Matt. Here in Boston, Matt still stays connected to Zimbabwe’s music through playing and studying the Mbira, a traditional African instrument. Since leaving home, Matt has earned a Bachelor of Music Degree from Humber College in Toronto and a Master’s Degree from the Berklee Global Jazz Institute.

As a band leader, Matt's debut album ‘Atlas’ was released in January 2023 receiving critical acclaim from Downbeat Magazine, The WholeNote, Jazz Life and countless other publications. His sophomore album Daybreak was released March 20th 2026.

“Matt Greenwood is a special type of musician, the one who can paint you a picture without even picking up a paintbrush”.– Aaron Willschick - V13 Media

“the finesse of Greenwood’s guitar playing deserves a thousand times more ovations than albums by guitarists focused on demonstrative virtuosity where speed rivals the number of notes played per minute.” - Frankie Pfeiffer - Paris Move

“A few things set Greenwood apart from his contemporaries, a willingness to allow his music to breathe, for starters. Resisting the urge to fill every space, he opts for an understated attack more typically shown by the seasoned performer who's reached that stage after many decades.” - Ron Schepper - Textura

“This music—with its start-to-finish cohesion of vision—sounds like world-building, with Greenwood painting spacey soundscapes via deftly-applied post-production machinations.A marvellous debut; a marvellous recording, period. Expect a great deal more from Matt Greenwood.” - Dan McClenaghan - All About Jazz
